SUNY Poly’s Economic Impact: Driving Growth and Opportunity Across the Region

SUNY Poly recently partnered with Lightcast, a leading provider of labor market analytics, to conduct a comprehensive economic impact study examining the university’s contributions to the Mohawk Valley and Central New York region. Released in August 2026 and reflecting fiscal year 2024–25, the study found that SUNY Poly generated $356.8 million in economic impact, supporting 2,901 jobs across the region.

The study highlights SUNY Poly’s role as an economic engine through its operations, research activities, student spending, and the contributions of alumni in the workforce. Key findings include:

  • $273.1 million in alumni impact, reflecting increased earnings and productivity of graduates employed throughout the region.
  • $75.6 million in operations spending impact, supporting 685 regional jobs.
  • $5.1 million in student spending impact, supporting local businesses and communities.
  • $3 million in research spending impact, contributing to regional economic growth and innovation.

Delivering a Strong Return on Investment

Beyond its regional economic contributions, the study found that SUNY Poly delivers significant long-term benefits for students, taxpayers, and society.

The average SUNY Poly bachelor’s degree graduate earns $38,100 more annually than a worker with a high school diploma or equivalent in New York, translating to approximately $1.5 million in additional earnings over a working lifetime.

The study also found that for every dollar invested:

  • Students receive $6.20 in higher future earnings.
  • Taxpayers receive $1.60 in benefits through increased tax revenues and public sector savings.
  • Society receives $8.30 in benefits, contributing to an estimated $950.4 million in long-term statewide benefits.

These findings reinforce SUNY Poly’s vital role in preparing a skilled workforce, advancing research and innovation, and creating economic opportunity. As the university celebrates its 60th anniversary, its continued contributions demonstrate the lasting value of investing in higher education and the prosperity of the communities it serves.
